  • Ensures the correct position of the mouth, tongue and jaw muscles.
  • It allows for greater adaptability, as a newborn baby will rest their lips on the centre of the base, while an older baby with a larger mouth will be able to place their lips nearer the outer edge, taking the entire teat inside their mouth.
  • The tip of the teat can reach more or less far back in the mouth as the baby grows.
