10 reasons why you should go to antenatal classes

During pregnancy you can never be too prepared, especially if you’re a first-time mum. That’s why antenatal classes are a good starting point to get down to it and learn about pregnancy, birth, the post-partum period and even how to look after your baby during the first few days.

Why should you go to antenatal classes?

  1. As well as learning about the theory and practice of these matters, it’s a good time to meet other mums who are in the same situation as you. It’s vital to feel the importance of a support group from the start.
  2. You’ll learn all about pushing and how you should breathe during labour, which will help you to control the pain of the contractions better.
  3. You’ll learn about the protocol followed in the maternity hospital, and you may even be able to visit before the birth to see the facilities. That way you’ll feel much calmer when the time comes.
  4. You’ll learn everything about the available pain relief methods, whether they’re pharmacological (epidural anaesthetic) or non-pharmacological, if the maternity hospital where you’re going to give birth offers them.
  5. It’s the perfect place to talk about your concerns and fears. Your midwife is there to help you, train you and prepare you for the arrival of your baby.
  6. Basic baby care and breastfeeding are also important points on these courses.
  7. It’s a good time to involve your partner and make him feel more of a father than ever. The training you receive in these antenatal classes will help you both. As you know, the role of the dad is very important when you go into labour.
  8. Talking of labour, knowing the protocols and knowing how your pregnancy will evolve will allow you to leave behind many of your fears. Remember, information is empowering!
  9. Having a midwife at your disposal will certainly be helpful if you decide to make a birth plan.
  10. As well as the more theoretical classes, there’s a practical part aimed at taking care of your physical fitness. You’ll do exercises specially designed for pregnancy and stretches that will help make you feel better.

As you can see, attending antenatal classes has so many advantages. Talk to your midwife and arrange an appointment. You won’t regret it!
