Antenatal classes: what first-time mums should know
When a pregnancy begins, a whole mechanism is set in motion, including tests, check-ups, analyses and plenty of monitoring to make sure that both mum and baby remain physically healthy throughout this special period. But we mustn’t forget the mother’s emotional care during this important process of change. Antenatal classes form part of this. Many women think these classes only prepare you for actually giving birth, but the sessions cover much more than that.

What can we expect from antenatal classes?
- They’re a good place to meet other women in the same situation as you, which will help you become aware of your condition. This is particularly important for first-time mums. It will act as an introduction to motherhood by offering you the chance to share experiences and see other pregnant women.
- All of this will allow you to talk about any concerns or questions you might have. You’ll learn from all the questions asked by the mums in the group, which will give all of you more confidence. These women will be forming part of a group of mothers for the first time.
- The midwife will tell you about how your pregnancy will evolve and what to expect. Learning all this information will make you feel more confident and aware of your imminent motherhood.
- Not only will you discuss pregnancy, you’ll also talk about birth and child care.
- Caring for your baby and breastfeeding are also important topics. Many health centres offer you the possibility of attending breastfeeding groups, which is highly recommendable because going to these meetings will provide interesting practical and theoretical training for new mums.
Your visit to the midwife
When you first visit the midwife, find out when the antenatal classes will be held. There will be two meetings that coincide with the first and second trimester to answer any questions you might have and help mums with the typical problems they experience at this stage.
More in-depth training usually takes place from week 28 onwards. The classes consist of a practical and a theoretical part. The theoretical part will include prenatal fitness, relaxation techniques, breathing control and tips to relieve the discomfort typical of the last trimester of pregnancy.
Trust your midwife! She’ll be able to give you all the support and information you need during this special stage. Pregnancy is a time of change, a turning point, so share it with other women who are going through the same thing and do so with the help of a professional; it will make this a wonderful journey toward the ultimate destination: motherhood.
