10 tips to avoid the fear of giving birth

evitar el miedo al parto

After months of preparation, 40 weeks of pregnancy, the great moment is approaching: the day of the birth. Fear, uncertainty and nerves are normal feelings that you may experience. But we want to help you out.

10 tips to avoid the fear of giving birth

  1. Practice relaxation techniques during your pregnancy. This may be yoga or some kind of activity that allows you to connect with your body and your baby. If you keep at it, you’ll be able to apply what you’ve learned when it comes to delivering your baby.
  2. To overcome any fear it’s best to be informed. We therefore recommend knowing what methods are available to you now to prevent pain. You can use pharmacological methods like an epidural anaesthetic and other non-pharmacological methods. You can choose or use a combination of both to achieve a “quick and easy” labour.
  3. Information will empower you, so make sure you attend the antenatal classes given by your midwife. Learning about the last few weeks of pregnancy, being able to identify the signs of early labour and knowing the steps by which you’ll finally get to meet your baby will settle your doubts and make you feel more sure of yourself.
  4. Look out for mum and baby groups or even breastfeeding groups in your local area and go to the meetings. Meeting other mums, exchanging experiences and seeing their babies will immerse you in the world of motherhood.
  5. Although it’s recommendable to do this throughout pregnancy, as you near the end make a note of all the questions you have in the days before your visit with the gynaecologist or midwife. Answering them will make you feel more confident.
  6. Try to see the place where your baby will be born beforehand. Many maternity hospitals offer visits for mums-to-be. Knowing where you’re going to have your baby will boost your confidence.
  7. Make a birth plan to clearly state all your wishes before giving birth.
  8. Don’t leave your partner out. Try to make sure he’s with you throughout this process of preparation. He’ll be a great support when the time comes.
  9. Look after your pelvic floor. Preparing properly will help you know your body better. Your midwife will tell you what to do.
  10. Worried you won’t know what to do and you’ll freeze up? Talk to your midwife about it, or share these fears with a group of mums. Talking about your doubts out loud and hearing about their experiences will make you feel more sure of yourself.

Don’t worry, you’re ready for it! The big moment is yet to come. Live every second of this unique experience and just enjoy it.
