Suffering from groin pain during pregnancy? This is why

dolor ingles embarazo

From the beginning of pregnancy, the numerous changes that your body undergoes can cause discomfort or even pain in your pubic area or groin. Of course, each woman will have a different experience depending on her personal circumstances.

What changes cause these problems?

  • Physical changes. As the months go by, the abdominal walls will gradually stretch to accommodate the foetus.
  • Postural changes. As your size increases, you’ll adapt your posture, not always correctly, which can have negative consequences. This often results in pain in your pelvic area, groin or even buttocks radiating to your leg.
  • Hormonal changes. During pregnancy the presence of the hormone relaxin increases significantly to help the joints and ligaments relax. But this laxity can be uncomfortable or painful. In fact, if there is too much laxity in the pelvic area, it can (in some cases) cause symphysis pubis dysfunction. If the pain persists or increases, it’s always a good idea to talk to your doctor or midwife.

Is there any treatment or preventive measure?

  • Doing regular exercise, provided that your doctor has given you the go-ahead. Swimming is highly recommendable.
  • Postural re-education. When sitting, try to make sure your back is properly supported.
  • Avoid bearing weight or making sudden movements; it’s better to go slowly but surely.
  • Don’t stay in the same position for too long.
  • Do Kegel exercises to strengthen your pelvic floor.

And don’t forget to see a specialist physiotherapist who can offer you a wide range of techniques to help you feel better.
